Baščaršija
We begin in Baščaršija, the heart of Sarajevo’s old town and the place where the city’s story truly begins.
Join my Sarajevo free walking tour and discover the city through local stories, history, and everyday life.
Overview
We start in the heart of Baščaršija, Sarajevo’s Ottoman old town, surrounded by narrow streets, copper workshops, mosques, old caravanserais, and the smell of Bosnian coffee. From there, we follow the city’s layers through time, from the Ottoman period to Austria-Hungary, from Yugoslavia to modern Sarajevo today.
Along the way, we visit some of Sarajevo’s most important places, including Coppersmith Street, City Hall, the Emperor’s Mosque, Latin Bridge, the Meeting of Cultures, Sarajevo Roses, the Old Synagogue area, the Sacred Heart Cathedral, nearby Christian heritage sites, and the legacy of Gazi Husrev Bey.
But this tour is not just about monuments and dates. It is about understanding Sarajevo: why the city looks the way it does, how different empires shaped it, how different religions and communities lived side by side, and why Sarajevo became one of Europe’s most fascinating crossroads.
